Filming has wrapped on Bridgerton Season 3 – so when will the lavish series return?
Season 1 was based on the first of the Bridgerton books, The Duke and I, and followed Daphne Bridgerton's dalliance with the Duke of Hastings; before Season 2 drew from the next novel in the series, The Viscount and I, about the eldest of the siblings, Viscount Bridgerton, and his will-they-won't-they romance with Kate Sharma. Fans had expected the formula to continue for the next series, with the book An Offer from a Gentleman zoning in on the love life of Benedict Bridgerton.
A post to the Bridgerton social media later dispelled the idea, with a message in the voice of Lady Whistledown, reading: ‘Dearest Readers, It is only fair that in this author’s third year chronicling the marriage mart, Mayfair’s social season should find its focus on a third son… as well as a third daughter. This author can confirm that the upcoming season will focus on none other than the budding relationship between Mr. Colin Bridgerton and one Miss Penelope Featherington.’
Played by Nicola Coughlan, Penelope Featherington is a fan favorite in both the books and small-screen adaptation. And of course, she’s also (spoiler alert) the show’s anonymous letter-writer Lady Whistledown, which means it will be interesting to see how her position at the center of the action will impact her role as the gossip-mongering narrator. Colin Bridgerton, meanwhile, portrayed by Luke Newton, has so far been Penelope’s close friend, yet she’s ever-more tortured by her romantic feelings for him.
A plot synopsis released by Netflix reveals: ‘Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly.’
As for her love interest, Colin has ‘returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realise that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly.’
