- Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz responds to Netflix's e-mail about finishing the karate show by mentioning the delay caused by the WGA strike.
- Hurwitz vows to resume work on Cobra Kai once the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) reach fair agreements.
Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz shares his response to an e-mail from Netflix, bringing it back to the delay of the show's final episodes. With the confirmation that Cobra Kai would end with season 6, many of the dojo drama's long-time viewers were eager to find out how the story would conclude. That's especially true since the season 5 finale ended in an unusual spot that saw most of the protagonists fighting on the same side and becoming friendly. But with the WGA strike for fair wages, Cobra Kai season 6 writers' room has shut down like most other productions until the issue is resolved.
Hurwitz, who created the Netflix show with Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg, mentioned the Cobra Kai season 6 delay in a recent Twitter post.
I haven’t forgotten! The moment SAG and the WGA get fair deals, we’ll get right back to work on that! #WritersGuildStrike #SAGAFTRAstrike pic.twitter.com/yaEFnnyO1q — Jon Hurwitz (@jonhurwitz) August 18, 2023
In the social media post, Hurwitz shares a screenshot. It shows that he received an e-mail that reads: "Don't forget to finish Cobra Kai" alongside a graphic for the series which features the cast. In response, Hurwitz writes: "I haven’t forgotten! The moment SAG and the WGA get fair deals, we’ll get right back to work on that! #WritersGuildStrike #SAGAFTRAstrike."
What To Expect From Cobra Kai Season 6 (& When Could It Return?)
The most significant aspect of Cobra Kai season 5 is what the show decides to do with its couples and major rivalries. All the romantic pairings are left on a happy note. As for feuds such as Miguel versus Robby and Samantha versus Tory, the formerly warring characters either made peace with one another or even became friends. This could suggest that the Emmy-nominated comedy has nowhere else to go, except that there is one major cliffhanger and a potential tease for the final season.
In the Cobra Kai season 5 finale, it's revealed that Kreese has escaped prison through an elaborate plan. He'll likely be out for revenge. An international karate tournament called the Sekai Taikai was name-dropped, with the karate gathering known for featuring the very best martial arts fighters from around the globe. This could potentially shape Cobra Kai season 6 in some way.
As for when the show will be back, the future of Cobra Kai and other shows depends on when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes end. A few analysts have suggested that Netflix should break off from other studios and streamers to form their own deal, so their original productions could at least resume. The WGA and AMPTP (which represents the studio and streamer side) are beginning to talk regularly, after months of silence from the AMPTP, so it's hopefully a positive sign.
